June at Ozean

Summer looks good on you. But your body might be telling a different story.

Longer days. More social plans. Travel. Late dinners. Less routine.

By mid-summer, many people start noticing things they don’t immediately connect to the season: bloating, restless sleep, increased inflammation, fatigue that lingers beneath the fun, or a nervous system that feels just a little harder to settle.

In Chinese medicine, summer is considered a season of excess heat. And that heat doesn’t just show up as sweat. It shows up in digestion, recovery, sleep, mood, and the way your body holds tension.

I’ve been noticing this in myself lately. Even with years of movement practice, summer has a way of pulling us out of our normal rhythms if we’re not paying attention. This month, I’ve been coming back to a few simple practices that help me feel grounded, restored, and connected to my body.

Here are a few of them.

WHAT TO DRINK: The Ozean Summer Smoothie

Cooling. Nourishing. Restorative.

This has become one of my favorite summer rituals.

Mango and pear are considered cooling foods in Chinese medicine and pair beautifully with coconut water and/or coconut milk for hydration and recovery. Reishi mushroom is an adaptogen I often keep in rotation to support stress, resilience, and overall wellness.

Together, they taste like summer while supporting hydration, digestion, and recovery.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 ripe pear, cored (skin on)
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • ½ cup full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 tsp reishi mushroom powder
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • Squeeze of fresh lime
  • Ice as needed

Blend until smooth.

Drink slowly.

Let it land.

Optional: Add a pinch of sea salt if you’ve been spending extra time in the heat or sweating more than usual.

What's in My Summer Rotation

Reading:

The Night Circus. A beautifully written fantasy that feels like stepping into another world for a moment before returning to your own a little more present.

Listening:

Upbeat European summer vibes featuring Vessbroz, Aidan, and DARA’s “Bangaranga.” Perfect for dancing, drives along the coast, and those days when you want a little extra momentum.

Practicing:

Afternoon walks without my iPhone and giving myself a few quiet minutes before the end of the day.

Enjoying:

Peak-season fruit, ocean air, longer evenings, and saying “YES” to a little more spontaneity.

Sometimes wellness is less about adding more and more and more about returning to what already works.

WHAT TO MOVE THROUGH: Spine Stretch Forward

When the nervous system has been overstimulated, the back body often carries the load first.

You feel it between your shoulder blades. In the tension across the neck. In the breath that stays a little too high in the chest.

It isn’t a stretch you force. It’s a stretch you breathe into.

How to practice it:

- YouTube

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

youtube.com

Sit tall on the mat or floor with your legs extended, hip-width apart. Flex your feet, toes pointed up. Reach your arms forward at shoulder height, palms down.

Inhale and lift out of your hips. Feel your spine get longer before anything moves.

On your exhale, nod your chin towards your chest and begin to round forward one vertebra at a time, reaching through your fingertips while rooting your sitz bones into the mat.

Inhale where you are.

Then slowly roll yourself back to upright, stacking the spine from the bottom up. Return to sitting tall.

Repeat for 3-5  rounds. If your hamstrings feel tight, bend your knees slightly or sit on a folded blanket.

Depth isn’t the goal. Articulation is.

Notice what shifts in your breath, your posture, and your nervous system afterward.

MOVEMENT HAS A SOUNDTRACK, TOO!

Restoration isn’t only physical. What we listen to matters too.

This is the playlist I’ve been reaching for lately during walks, running errands around town, Pilates workouts, and summer mornings.

A QUESTION FOR YOU

Hit reply and tell me:

What has your body been asking for more of this summer?

  • More movement?
  • More sleep?
  • More recovery?
  • More time outside?

I read every reply, and your answers often inspire future content, workshops, and conversations.

Fall Back in Love with Yourself
Sarah’s Note: The Return Season September has always felt like a reset to me.Not a “start over” kind of reset… but a return. A return to the rituals that make us feel grounded. The movement that makes us feel strong. The meals that remind us to slow down. This month is about falling back in love with the body you’re in while creating habits that support the life you want to keep living. Because...
A New Year. A New Everything.
There’s something about the beginning of the new year that feels different when you’ve truly lived your way into it. 2026 didn’t arrive quietly for me. It came with clarity, expansion, and a deeper understanding of the work I’m here to do. I've held off on sending this first newsletter because I didn’t want it to be a recap. I wanted it to feel like stepping into what’s unfoldin...
